School Information

St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s is an inclusive school which celebrates difference and is committed to excellence. We want children to achieve their maximum potential academically, to develop their own talents and skills and to be enriched by a range of experiences which will equip them with the thinking skills, values and self-confidence to lead a purposeful and fulfilled adult life. As a Catholic school, this has the teachings of Jesus Christ at its heart. At St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s, the National Curriculum is taught in a cross-curricular and progressive way which enables children to build on their skills, knowledge and understanding. We aim to develop children’s creativity and to provide a wide range of opportunities through which children will discover their individual talents. Links are made between the content and skills and then planned within a context to learning that is relevant to our local community, locality or further afield. Topic work always works towards an end product making the learning real and relevant. For instance children in Year 2 finished their topic on the 1960’s with a 1960’s disco for the parents and children, Educational visits and visitors speaking to the children are embedded in the curriculum. In order to make our curriculum vivid and real for your child, we place a great emphasis on experience-based learning. Our half-term themes often include visits out of school to local places of interest relevant to that topic.

We also focus on the skills children need to be successful learners. Curriculum planning includes a focus on learning to learn skills.

The teachers plan teaching and learning activities which are appropriate to the age and interests of the children. We aim to provide work for pupils that is differentiated so that the most able pupils are challenged and those children who are finding learning more difficult have support. As a school we are keen to explore different teaching strategies which explore the range of preferred learning styles. Teaching may be to the whole class or in smaller groups. Teaching assistants are deployed throughout the school to extend and develop the children’s learning.
