Our PSHE Curriculum

We realise the importance of preparing our children for the world in which we live today. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.

We follow a scheme of work called “I Know I Am, I Can" in Years 1-6.

We establish sets of ground rules when conducting PSHE lessons these are:

  • Listening to others
  • Sharing opinions, right to “pass” and asking questions
  • No assumptions, non-judgemental
  • Using correct or appropriate language
  • Confidentiality
  • Seeking help and advice

If you would like to see what is taught in each year group, please see the long term plans in the PSHE curriculum section.

PSHE does not just take place in discrete lessons it is embedded within the school curriculum and ethos.

At St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s, aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society by encouraging all children to follow our Mission Statement;

"We follow in the footsteps of Jesus to love, learn and laugh,” https://www.our-lady.dudley.sch.uk/page/a4aa74b0c56146379462947c15969be4/pic/ed46feb3d87343389393158287ba52e9/full_width/check/

We want all of our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class & school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities.

Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.

We teach PSHE in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, Literacy, Maths and Science, as well as through outdoor educational visits, community work and activities.

We hold annual events such as elections, Anti-Bullying week, celebrations of other faiths, Crucial Crew, Language Days, Emotional Health week, E-Safety weeks and Careers Day in order to extra support PSHE in school.

We utilise Toot Toot which enables pupils to report online any concerns they have and we have Toot Toot Ambassadors who are trained to help other pupils and reinforce the anti- bullying message. We have Play Buddies, School Councillors, Eco Warriors and Community ambassadors who are active in school.

We have dedicated support alongside class teaching to support emotional health and self-esteem. We have A Quiet Place in school, massage, utilise guided visualisations, meditation and mindfulness to support pupils. We also have support form external agencies and psychotherapists who work within school. Designated members of staff provide day to day support for pupils. Children and parents are happy to seek support and advice from staff when needed.
